Community of Support

The Morse house 2013 wm

SUCCESS!!! As you know yesterday was World Autism Awareness Day, the most important day to Light It Up Blue,  and didn’t this town LIGHT IT UP BLUE!!!!!!!!!  I can’t tell you how stunned I am by the show of support that our little communities have shown for this spectacular event.  Way back in February I ordered 75 light bulbs hoping to be able to sell at least 50 of them.  Those first 75 bulbs were gone inside of 4 days!  The people I have seen wearing our bracelets, pins or t-shirts is nothing short of amazing to me. It sends me right over the moon every time I think about all the love and enthusiasm that people have shown for our autistic community! I am so proud to call Houlton, Maine my hometown.  I can’t thank our local radio station, WHOU-FM, enough for their hard work and dedication in helping spread the word. They rustled up radio sponsors to help get the word out, sold merchandise for me and mentioned how awesome Lighting It Up Blue is at every chance they got.  Without our local media, especially WHOU, this event would not have been as popular as it was, no doubt about it. My goals for this year was 15 businesses and 25 homes.  Goal accomplished!!!!!

Ready for some of our stats?

(Registered) Individuals with ASD in Aroostook County: 111

Number of Bulbs sold: 250 (sold out!)

Radio sponsors: 20

Participating Businesses: 23

T-Shirts sold: 85

Countries that viewed this blog during the month of March: 12

Amount of money that was raised: $903.50

2 LIUB 2013

Next year will be bigger and better! I had a LOT of people asking about t-shirts. I only focused on Dominic’s school for this first year but next year it will be town wide, I promise!  My biggest mistake was taking this task on all by myself but I honestly didn’t think LIUB would catch on as fast as it did!  Next year there will be teams, sponsors, plenty of bulbs and merchandise galore!  More businesses will be selling the merchandise as well.  These are my goals for 2014! If you are interested in being on a team please contact me beemorsefarm@gmail.com. I am hoping to have 3 people in each of our smaller communities: Island Falls, Patten, Oakfield, Smyrna, Littleton, Monticello, etc. and I think we’ll need at least 20 people for Houlton.  We have a lot to cover: the hospital, banks, Main Street, each school, etc.  I am also going to be looking for sponsors to help with the cost of merchandise/t-shirts.  This year t-shirts were pre-order/pre-paid only – next year I would like shirts to be on hand and sold on a as needed basis.

Light It Up Blue Houlton, Maine

AS_12-LIUB-HORIZ_web

It’s almost that time of year again :)   April is Autism Awareness month and April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day!  Autism Speaks (visit them here) launched the Light It Up Blue campaign roughly 4 years ago.  We celebrate by lighting up business, monuments, homes and political buildings blue to show support of autism awareness. In 2012 more than 3000 iconic building and landmarks in over 50 countries on six continents turned their lights blue.  How is that for popularity :)

This year the Morse Family is launching our own Light It Up Blue campaign for Houlton!  We have set a goal of 15 local businesses and 25 homes that will turn their lights blue to show their support for autism awareness. However, just because we are concentrating on Houlton doesn’t mean I don’t want the rest of Maine (or beyond) participating!

How can you Light It Up Blue?

Lighting It Up Blue is as simple as switching your outdoor lights from white light bulbs to blue ones, wearing blue clothing and tweeting or posting on Facebook about Lighting It Up Blue.

Where can you get light bulbs?

Home Depot has linked up with Autism Speaks and sells blue light bulbs as well as Coleman lanterns. Bulbs start on sale March 1st and lanterns start March 15th. Most Wal-Mart’s carry blue party lights. I am also selling them at not only a discounted price but 60% of the proceeds will be donated to the Autism Society of Maine. To get light bulbs from me you can swing by Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water Street, Houlton, call 532-3333 or email me at beemorsefarm@gmail.com. We are currently working on getting local stores to carry as well.

Is there any other merchandise?

You can visit Light It Up Blue (visit them here) for their official merchandise. We will also be selling T-shirts, pins and other autism merchandise, with 20% of the proceeds going to the Autism Society of Maine.   T-shirts are pre-order/pre-paid only this year so please contact me if you are interested.  All orders must be received by Monday, March 25th at noon.

February’s Foodie Penpal

Don’t know what a foodie penpal is?

Check out my earlier blog about Lindsay of the Lean Green Bean‘s Foodie Penpal program here.

The Reveal:

The FPP’s big reveal day was supposed to be yesterday but I only got my box on Tuesday and I didn’t have enough time to get photos and get a post about it before now.  I guess there are some up sides to waking up at 3 am ;) Apologies for such crummy photos but my eyes are still bleary.

My foodie penpal for this month was Nae of the blog,  I Choose The Sun. Let me tell you she must live in my head or something – this box was a treasure chest for me :)   Nae forgot to put her note into the box and mailed it separately. Of course I got the note first.  I opened that little envelope and my jaw dropped when I read what she had packed me.  How unfair- why didn’t I get my box first???!!! Red velvet whoopie pies?!?!  Coconut galore?!?!?  O.M.G., I love this gal! Tuesday I had to do a fast drive-by of my house during lunch and my box was there. Knowing what was in the box my brain instantly had a meltdown.  I tear into the box, palm up those lovely whoopie pies thinking all the while “this stuff is coming with ME!” (insert maniacal laughter here).  As I’m heading out the door my brain finally kicks on “WAIIIITTT a minute!!!! You have to take photos for your blog first” wwwwhhhhaaatttt???  NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!  I trudge back inside, head hanging, to return my goodies to the box.  I thought about them all afternoon at work, seriously.  I’m pretty sure all the work I did Tuesday afternoon had a lot of errors.  My poor sugar deprived brain :(   So you better appreciate these photos!

IMG_1649

Jace has come to love the FPP program as much as I do.  When these boxes roll through our door he’s is stuck to me like white on rice, waiting to see what treasure he’s going to snatch away from me.  These jellybeans were his pick this month.  He grabbed them up in his little grubby hands and off he runs: me tearing of behind him, the dog chasing me, the cat behind the dog, chaos ensueing…….all for this photograph folks.  As I’m sure you’ve guessed, the jellybeans are G-O-N-E gone.

IMG_1648I haven’t had the time to try this yet but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE peanut butter.  I’m pretty sure I won’t have a problem with this :)

IMG_1647

Have you ever seen these before?  We have them in almost every gas station up here but I’ve never tried them.  I didn’t actually know they were (supposed) to be coconut.  I was quite excited about these because I was like, I’m gonna love these AND be able to get them afterwards.  One of the biggest downfalls of the FPP is that I usually can’t find the products I like again. Those coconut bars from September still haunt me. They were delicious but they only make them in the U.K. and on a weird schedule like the-3rd-Thursday-of-the-month-starting-with-M-but-only-if-it’s-a-full-moon type weird schedule. Anyway….. these bars are full of fakeness. You can’t taste (or even feel) the coconut at all.  You know the old style red food coloring taste? That’s what the strawberry taste like….a bunch of gross flavorings.  The chocolate had a fake lemony aftertaste and didn’t taste like chocolate at all.  Needless to say, I was not a big fan of these.

IMG_1645

Haven’t had a chance to try these yet either.  I”m kind of afraid to though….I’m not a huge fan of mango. However, it has coconut in it so I WILL be trying these.

IMG_1644

These were way disappointing in my book.  Have you ever tried any gluten free stuff? These had the texture of gluten free- heavy and dense- but were so, super crumbly. If you held onto this little treat too long it crumbled to powder right out of your hand.  The flavor was decent and they looked delicious but the overall sandwich…. not good.

IMG_1642

I am so, so, so, so, soooooo excited to try this. Seriously, gingerbread cookie butter?????  Um, YUMM-O!!! I’m trying to figure out exactly how I’m going to use it.  I’m thinking this is going to be the base for some delicious frosting. Chocolate cake with some whipped gingerbread frosting?  Sounds good to me!

Thank you so much for such a fun box Nae!  I feel like you are either my sugar soul mate or you took the time to realize that I wasn’t joking when I said I loved sugar :)

Cup of Joe for a Joe

imageLogo

Cup of Joe for a Joe is a program run by Green Beans Coffee.   For 2 dollars a cup you can send a service member overseas a cup of coffee  through the Green Beans Coffee cafe’s found in some military bases. This program is completely random – you can’t say I would like to by my soldier a cup of coffee. With each donation you make you have the opportunity to write a message to the troop, and they have the opportunity to write you back!  Each $2 donation provides a cup for a different soldier.  Just think of how many lives you can touch by just giving them a cup of coffee for a measly $2.  Instead of heading to Starbucks and getting myself a $6 drink I can show 3 soldiers that I haven’t forgotten about them and that I appreciate their service.  I think that is pretty cool :)   Green Beans Coffee also has a Bag of Joe for a Joe program that, depending on the amount you donate, gives a soldier overseas a bag of coffee plus “x” amount of cups of coffee.  For example for $16 you can give a Bag of Joe plus 3 cups of joe.Green Beans Coffee also has a Bag of Joe for a Joe program that, depending on the amount you donate, gives a soldier overseas a bag of coffee plus “x” amount of cups of coffee.  For example for $16 you can give a Bag of Joe plus 3 cups of joe.

P.S. – I found out about this program through Gina left the mall’s blog.  She is a fellow “veteran” Soldier’s Angel (she has been doing this for years) I think now that I’ve found her I will be following her closely :)

Another Box O’ Goodies

I’m a little ashamed to admit that I’m only on my third box to my first soldier.  The very first box I sent was from the Soldiers Angels website.  It’s nice to just be able to order something without having to worry about what to pack but at the same time I want to be able to put personalized items in my boxes.  I thought with my first box that I would be able to track it and get an idea how long it would take for a package to get delivered to Soldier A but the post office failed to scan my package after the first transfer.  As I still haven’t heard from Soldier A I have not a clue in the world if he even got it :(   My local post office is trying to help me track it down but because it’s left the state of Maine it’s basically going to be impossible to do – grrr.  So hopefully these two boxes will be tracked properly and then I can get an idea of how long the packages take to arrive.

I decided to do an “entertainment” package.  I was thinking of sending popcorn but I don’t know if they have access to microwaves.  If anyone has any tips for me PLEASE let me know.  I would be forever in your debt!

IMG_1638

I was so disappointed in Walmart.  They took away their $1 toy section.  I was going to fill up on that stuff but Walmart has, once again, fallen through. I guess that was a blessing in disguise though because I visited 3 of our little mom & pop shops instead.

IMG_1639

I’m still not 100% sure of what my soldier’s interest are but I figured babes and food….could you really go wrong?  I’m taking a gamble on the books but I figured whatever he doesn’t like he’ll share.  Here’s hoping my boxes will find my soldiers……and in one piece!

Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Click here to see my first post on Soldier’s Angels.

Treasurers

We were able to make the Farmer’s Market yesterday (hooray!)  I love, love, love Farmer’s Markets.  It never ceases to amaze me the level of creativity people have.  It’s so inspiring. I just wish we had more Farmer’s Markets around. Living in a small town does have it’s disadvantages sometimes :(

So here are the treasures I came home with: IMG_1630

I wanted to link each artist’s website on my blog.  Word of mouth is so important to small businesses and that’s a little close to my heart :)

PicMonkey Collage

First up we have Merry Moose Candles.  The smell of this candle is beyond yummy.  It smells, almost, just like your making strawberry jam in the kitchen.  It makes my mouth water.  They have a variety of products including candles in both 10 oz and 16 oz., body lotion, linen spray and the little meltable tablets you use with a candle thingymabob.  They call it a tart but I have no clue if that’s what everyone else calls them

IMG_1636

One of my all time most favorite scents – lavender.  Seriously, nothing beats it.  Okay except freshly bathed babies…..but that’s the ONLY thing that trumps lavender in my book. This soap and wooden holder comes from Moon Crazy Fibre Arts  – just in case you couldn’t read it on the label ;)   I love how the exterior of the bar is felted – nice scrub-a-dub dubbing. I’m super excited to try it out.

IMG_1622

This is by far my favoritest treasure.  I was hemming and hawing over which one was my favorite and if I was going to purchase one.  Then I asked if she would move her chair so I could view the bottom row and it was love at first sight.  I love all the colors.  Everything just pops.  L.O.V.E. it!  This is from Abby of Accents by Abby. She has an Etsy shop found here.

IMG_1627

Another Accents by Abby trinket.  Seriously, fried eggs, how could you not wear them.  They made me laugh out loud when I saw them and I *heart* things that make me laugh out loud.  One of my mantra’s: you hafta laugh at the little things (it’s usually said with an elbow to my husbands ribs :) ).

Being at the Market yesterday kicked up my spring time longing another notch.  A goal I hope to meet this summer is going to Portland’s Farmers Market.  I hear it is phenomenal.  I have a feeling I’ll have to use the doe eyes on the hubby several times to get that to happen *giggle* My poor man.  Sometimes he doesn’t stand a chance :D

PHEW!

We have been soooo busy here.  Me, being the over ambitious person that I am, hand made both boys Valentines.  20 eye patches, 3 monsters pins, 10 lip pins, 5 heart pins, 3 frog pins, and a grand total of 11 bee pins.

photo(8)

I have to say my personal favorites were the honey bee pin and the girly pirate eye patches :)

IMG_1594

I’ve been in a huge cleaning spree, trying to get rid of stuff that has been piling up around the house.  I wish spring would hurry up so we could have our yard sale and finish up with this thing. Anyway, I ran across our Candy Party box that I bought last year but never actually had the party. It made perfect Valetine’s (if not a little overboard) for Jace’s daycare friends

IMG_1599

AND I volunteered to make cupcakes for Jace’s party….that he didn’t attend because he’s been sick all darn week.  He’s been such a pain in my….foot.

Chocolate cupcakes (my recipe) with Strawberry Swiss Meringue Buttercream Frosting from Beyond Frosting

Recipe can be found here for the frosting.  She also has a chocolate cupcake recipe on the same link.  I thought I was doing so well by reading through all the tips before I even started…..turns out I should have read her oringinal Swiss Meringue Buttercream frosting recipe because I didn’t get my sugar completely dissolved in the egg whites. Oh well, ya win some and lose some.  But they were still delicious and a hit I was told :)

moose-stompers2

On another note.  This weekend is Moosestompers Weekend here in Houlton (motto: Moose is Loose).  It’s a little festival that the town throws every February. There are games, free movies at our movie theatre, snowman sculpting contest, a special indoor farmers market, skating, a community bonfire and so much more.  Hopefully Jace will be feeling better so we can partake in some of the activities!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

The genius behind the packaging of Bee Morse Farm

Okay, so the genius is me and I’m totally tooting my own horn. But I can’t help be impressed with myself for my latest creations.  I’ve launched a Valentine pin collection at my Etsy store. Among the selection are the following pins:

IMG_1562 This little guy is one in a series of monster I’ve Got My Eye On You valentine pins

IMG_1440

The “official” pin of Bee Morse Farm- Valentine, Will You Bee Mine?

IMG_1565

And for my pirate loving son :)

Of course my sheer ingeniousness doesn’t always hit me right away.  In this case it took months! Way back last May, right after we closed on the land,  I was searching for honey labels. Seriously, I was honey label shopping before I even ordered the bees. I stumbled upon this website and after working with Anne (she is seriously one of the BEST people on the face of the Earth.  I love her so, so much!)  on the honey labels I had all these ideas zooming around in my head. I dreamed of all the labels I could use and the products we could sell.  I went nuts, I admit it. I have a list of products I want to do that is a mile long, all including honey, beeswax, or the combination of the 2. I should probably mention that even though I have the honey labels, and 700 one pound honey bottles (that is the real  number folks, NOT an exaggeration), my girls produced zero pounds of extra honey I could take last year. So all those products and labels I’ve dreamed of  will have to wait until the end of this summer. Well, hopefully we’ll have honey and beeswax by the end of summer!

Anyway…….since last May I have been working with Anne on creating a logo, and getting my business cards (they are mini Moo Cards from Moo Cards). I’ve been tweaking things here and there…font changes, color changes, etc. I think I’ve finally settled on the official logo of Bee Morse Farm!  You know, the one that will be trademarked (I’m actually in the process of doing that as I type – whoo hoo!)

Card-01

My very first label design! Our applesauce and pickles, which by the way, I can’t legally sell until I get my kitchen licensed.  That is a project I must tackle extremely soon. Aren’t these labels beyond fun :)

IMG_1134

IMG_1103

My latest new packaging items are beyond ridiculously cute:custom rubber stamps from Bear Rubber Stamps.  Seriously they are so incredible.  She captured the details I wanted perfectly! Bee Morse Farm

IMG_1584

Bee Morse Farm Apple leather – yum!

I am so, so, so excited about everything coming together. I love creating new products so I can come up with a nifty little package to match it. *Sigh* I wish I could quit my job and do this stuff full time but alas, people need to start buying my cutely packaged items before I can even remotely think about getting done a job that puts a roof over our head.  In due time I hope…….

January Foodie Penpal

YAY it’s Foodie Penpal time of the month again!  This month my penpal was the lovely Hima.  Her blog is All Four Burners and can be found here. Hima caught the flu, unfortunately, right around the time my box was supposed to be sent out so it was a little late getting here (completely understandable don’tcha think?) so we haven’t had any time to test out the products.  I’ve been on this huge granola kick so getting this yummy granola is awesome.  I just might have to share this hot sauce with my brother, Ted.  He’s a connoisseur of all things hot sauce related ;)   And last but not least, I’m almost positive Dominic and Jace will be claiming the chocolate sauce.  I think I can hear the spoons clinking against the glass right now………

Thank you Hima for a wonderful package!!!

A box for my soldier

I thought I’d share with you my first ever I-did-it-myself box that I’m sending to my soldier.  Previously I had purchased my boxes pre-done in the Soldier’s Angels store found here.

I still haven’t heard back from my soldier *big sad face* however, I am trying to not let it bother me to much.  Writing letters is not a strong point of mine and it’s even harder to write a letter to a stranger not knowing what type of personality they have, if your jokes are going to offend them or if they are even interested in what your writing about.  To make it all the much worse I have no C.L.U.E. what to send in a package.  I know where to mail his stuff to but I don’t know what the weather is like, what items he needs or what his interest are.  A bit frustrating for me, can you tell???

*Sigh* ANNNYYYWHO….here is my first box:IMG_1537

I decided to stuff my box with stuff I think he would need to survive in a sand box.  Wet ones, those are going to be in every box as I heard they are a hit over there, Germ-X, a few autism pins, Bag Balm, this nifty Combat Cream I found while Christmas shopping for Josh.  Turns out it works really, really well.  Josh got a super bad welding burn on his face (crummy working conditions:( ) After using the Combat Cream for 2 days the burn has virtually disappeared! I’m sure you can see the rest of the stuff so I won’t list it all.

IMG_1540I

bought both my soldier and I a Soldier’s Angels sweatshirt. I send out Salt Water Taffy in all my Foodie Penpal boxes and get rave reviews on them so I thought I’d throw a box in for my soldier too :)

IMG_1539

I put all the liquid stuff in little ziplock bags and then put everything in a large gallon ziplock bag so my guy doesn’t have to rummage through the box forever and chance throwing something away.

Next up I threw everything into a medium sized US Postal flat rate box, went online to fill out the custom forms – which I’m not going to lie….that’s a little daunting.  I have printed all my forms but I don’t have the custom envelope so off to the post office I go to finish off my package and get it in the mail.  IMG_1541

If your curious about Soldier’s Angels and missed my previous post you can go here and read all about it.  I hope you take the time out of your life and adopt a soldier!
